At the centre of a raging controversy over his association with the IPL Kochi franchise,Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday allegedly received a death threat.
The Delhi Police later gave a clean chit to a man who was detained in connection with the message sent on the minister’s personal secretary’s mobile phone. Sources said the SMS asked the minister to apologise to IPL commissioner Lalit Modi or else he would be killed. The message claimed the D Company of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was involved.
The sender of the message identified himself as Shaki. After the SMS landed,Tharoors office informed the police. Preliminary investigation revealed that the message originated from a Tata phone number in West Delhi. Sources said the phone connection had been activated earlier this month.
Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said,Initial investigations have confirmed that the message was sent from a number which registered in one Manik Vermas name. However,Verma doesnt seem to be at fault and has been released. Bhagat said they were now trying to figure out who sent the messages.
