Hours after Pranab Mukherjee's very public snub Tharoor tweeted: 'The govt has never paid a single paisa for my stay at the Taj.'

The “gym and some privacy” keep Shashi Tharoor at a suite in the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi. On Wednesday, the Minister of State for External Affairs is hosting an Iftaar party from 6.15 pm at the Diwan-i-Aam of the hotel.

Invites have been sent out by the Ministry — the cards carry the national emblem, mention the MEA’s Protocol division and list its telephone numbers under RSVP.

There have been many Iftaar parties in the past by political leaders but no one recalls one at a five-star deluxe hotel. Tharoor’s predecessor E Ahamed hosted Iftaar parties on his bungalow lawns while in the ministry. Similarly, former minister Ramvilas Paswan hosted parties at the government-owned Ashok Hotel. Even former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had hosted an Iftaar at the Ashok Hotel.

MEA spokesperson Vishnu Prakash declined to comment but sources said this was part of the “official entertainment” as Tharoor handles the charge of Gulf countries — implying that the bill is being paid by the MEA.

It has been a tradition to host an Iftaar party for envoys of the Gulf countries by the MoS in-charge during Ramzan, said sources. Calls were made to Shashi Tharoor for a comment but he didn’t respond although hours after Pranab Mukherjee’s very public snub, he tweeted: “The govt has never paid a single paisa for my stay at the Taj. This is frankly ridiculous.”

opinionBy: hari | 16-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward i am rather flaggerblasted to see somebody suggesting how dr.sasitaroor can spend from his pocket for his stay at a 5 star hotel.after working in UN for almost 30 years and writing several books i wonder if many think that he is still a man in BPL category.i understand that his UN pension alone comes to lakhs of rupees.if he was staying out of govt expense i wonder why the famed politicians @journos in this great country didnt produce even an iota of evidence to contradict his statements.this is just petty mongering .if there is evidence to show that dr.taroor spent govt money for his stay prove it....then critisise
Tharoor is right .... we all support youBy: dm | 14-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Rahul gandhi had advised austerity for all the congress members and claims to wear simple clothes and not waste money. He said its the duty of all politicians to be austere. But it is alleged that he has a personal biking track as well as one for go-karting. Rahul Gandhi has a ministerial bungalow (He is only a 2-term MP), and a fully kitted gym at home. He is a regular member of atleast two of the Delhi's poshest gyms, and one of them is a 5-star. This is hypocritical!!!Atleast Shashi Tharoor is not hypocritical and he is honest to say that he needs a Gym and privacy. He is too truthful to be an Indian polititian and especially congress politician!! Somehow we indians expect our netas to walk like Bapu. This is frankly ridiculous !!
MrBy: Vinod | 10-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward If Krishna and Tharoor have paid their hotel bills themselves then they need to prove their sources of income with which they can afford to pay Rs.50,000 to Rs.90,000 PER DAY for 90 days. Can they prove how they afforded to spare Rs.45,00,000 from their personally earned money to pay for their 3 month stay in the 5 star hotels ?
