What is it like, being Viswanathan Anand’s wife? Are the stress levels distressing? Are the off days really never such? Is it only party to play and the stage and accolades?

Nope, confesses Aruna, always alongside the new world champion. “Actually, he is a very easy person to get along with, and that’s what takes the stress off it all,” she says with a smile. “When he is not at ‘work’ we really have quiet and cool evenings, mostly at home. He loves to watch movies, like Faulty Towers and such, so I carry a set of DVDs along with me in the suitcase.”

The Anands have, as Aruna puts it, a “decent” house in Madrid with a lawn, a few ground floor rooms and a basement where Anand works. The atmosphere is cool, and as Anand says: “By now she knows my moods, what I expect when and she has everything organised.”

Actually it came through time. “I have carefully followed his pattern and this helped in the long run,” Aruna says. Overall, it’s a family affair for Anand, moves that have all the potential to break a few more records.
