Almost three years ago, when guitarist Sushant Thakur fell in love, only to be left heartbroken, he penned a song — Moonless Nights. The song that was a fixture at the Delhi-based band Big Bang Blues' gigs thereafter, also became one of the more requested numbers at the band's subsequent outings. Now, three years after the band was formed, Moonless Nights and a host of other original compositions by Big Bang Blues will be released in their yet-untitled debut EP in October. The six piece outfit also has dates for an India tour marked aside for the same month.

The EP opens with Lovestruck Blues, a standard blues progression track which pays tribute to the American blues musician Muddy Waters; goes on to Moonless Nights that has a rock-n-roll feel to it with the added sound of the slide guitars and harmonica. There is also the mellow Sweet Bridge, the powerful Aretha Franklin-like vibe of Disrespected Blues and finally, the rock-n-roll survivor tale in Junky Stone.

The band that is busy recording the songs at a studio in CR Park, is one of the very few blues bands (others are Shillong-based Soulmate and Mumbai-based Blackstartblues) in the country that has an interesting, distinct sound. Even at a time when indie music is evolving in terms of genres, blues still remains one of the lesser-heard genre in India. "Blues is the mother of all music genres, and in India, people are more inclined towards the modern genres than the root genre. But, we are doing our thing. If we get an audience it's great, if we don't, we will still continue doing our thing," says Roy, 25. Excited about the EP, the band has sourced artist Abhishek Majumdar for the album and poster art.
