The BIG GAME

  • This has to be the Hummer among Indian laptops. There aren’t many others of this size in the market, and that could be why the Intex G17Y-F2210 Gaming Book stands out from the rest.
But first things first: If you want a laptop to carry along on your assignments, read no further. This isn’t what you are looking for.

But if you are looking for a machine that will put you bang in the middle of Quake 4 action or behind the steering of a Porsche on the Need for Speed circuit then this is your dope. Here is a laptop that can slowly edge out the other entertainment gadgets in your house before they realise what is happening. For, this 17” giant comes with a hybrid TV tuner with remote, DVI port, 7-in-1 card reader and SRS WOW speakers.

Ironically, this is not its selling point. That distinction goes to its superb gaming abilities — among them, an Intel Core 2 Duo T7100, 2GB RAM and NVidia GeForce Go 8700 graphic card. What all this means is games seem more real than they have ever been. I am not much of a gamer, but this was the first time that I realised most games have 3D images. No overlapping graphics or dragging images here. And for once the laptop speakers are enough to hear the enemy creep up behind you — if you are buying a laptop, you can always spend more for a couple of good speakers.

But like most TFT screens a lot of adjustment goes behind getting the angle and the contrast right, though the big screen means there is acres of space for your hand to move about on the keys. The big screen also makes it a tad too heavy. At 3.95 kg, you will need a strong pair of thighs to support this one...but we all know gamers need no laps.

Priced at a competitive Rs 75,900, Intex seems to be winding up to give Dell, which is at the top of the gaming laptop race with its XPS and Alienware versions, and Acer’s Aspire 8920 a run for their money. But for the gamers among us money is no factor, it is the adrenalin that matters.
So are you game for this one?
