The brunch brigade

Parties are all about strobe-lights lighting up the night and hips shimmying to thumping music; about hands swaying in an intoxicated haze and good food on the table.

Parties are all about strobe-lights lighting up the night and hips shimmying to thumping music; about hands swaying in an intoxicated haze and good food on the table. Of bodies of friends and strangers jostling in a glitzy space for a brief period of mindless fun. Right? Here’s a reconsideration. Fun doesn’t mean nighttime parties any more.

Walk into Arc Asia at ABC Farms on a Sunday afternoon. Be assured that this is one lazy affair: refreshing drinks, munchy entrees and easy-on-the-ears music. Live acts keep the atmosphere lilting, song requests on paper napkins travel up to the stage. All laughter and banter is kept alive by a jolly RJ Tejas. Restaurant manager Imran Inamdar may join in the fun too. “Sunday afternoons are when everyone wants to relax. A tough week is behind them and another one beckons,so they want to fit in one day where all is easy going. We have ample caprioskas and mojitos moving around, along with additional counters of coconut water that can be had with rum and vodka,or even golas (ice shavings) on a few days. The idea is simple – to have a good time with friends without having to feel exhausted the next morning.”

Increasingly, youngsters and family folks alike are looking at afternoon and sunset parties as good platforms to extract all the fun that earlier only night soirees promised. “Sunny or overcast, its always fun time here,” says Gaurav Magoo,F&B manager of O Hotel, known for its Sunday noon pool-parties. “You have the entire day to yourself. People walk in at 10 am and stay on till 5 pm,enjoying the food and the music by DJ Mantri. We started this a year back, and I have noticed this quiet turnaround in the party scene in Pune. People now want to have responsible fun, with family and friends around, and still be fresh for Monday.”

The Spice Kitchen at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center offers tantalising brunches to lure in the weekend party-goer. “See,this is the kind of lifestyle that’s pervaded into our society now. The BPO crowd works through the night,so day partying works for them well. And now that both the spouses have jobs,Sunday cooking is passe. In effect, brunches have emerged as a great family timeout option for them. All the good stuff can be wrapped up in good time to recover for tomorrow. It is win-win all the way,” says F&B director Gagandeep Singh.

Taking cognizance of this change are all the eateries, lounges and pubs. Menus have been tweaked and prices pinched to make day time partying appealing. Live acts and kiddie corners have been infused so that everyone including the young one stays engaged. Executive chef at the Marriott,Subhash Sinha, talks about the best deal that this equation promises,”We serve a mix of varied cuisines from Asian to Lebanese,so that all palettes are gratified. There are live counters and some customised foods even get served on the table. The drinks are refreshing and light, and the desserts are loved by children and adults alike. And the best of all, everything evolves with the seasons. What more would anyone want?” Right.
