My wife is 51 years old. Last year, she had recurring cough and cold along with giddiness. Medical examination revealed that she had a hole her heart since birth. The pressure on lungs was very high. We did an angiography and despite the findings being serious, the consulting doctor told us that only symptomatic treatment could be given to the patient. According to the doctor, she cannot be operated on. Please advise.

Dr Ravi Kasliwal,Cardiologist,Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, replies: Before we conclude that the patient is non-operable,I would suggest that you conduct another ECG. If it is L to R shunt,as you have said in your query, then the patient should be operable. Congenital defects being found decades after the persons birth is common in India. This is because people do not go for regular check-ups. I would suggest that you take a second opinion in this case.
I am a software engineer and spend the entire day in front of my computer. Recently a doctor told me that I am suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). Please tell me if this condition is reversible and what needs to be done about it. R R Murali
Dr KPS Malik,Head of Ophthalmology department at Safdarjung Hospital, replies:If exerted for a long time without break, any body part can tire. The eye muscles are no different. All that is required to tackle Computer Vision Syndrome is optimum use of your eyes without putting much strain. Please buy an anti-reflective screen for your computer and make sure that you are sitting in a place which is adequately lit,as unnatural light also harms the eyes. Take rest every half-an-hour. Close your eyes for a few seconds and massage them.
