Delhi University's School of Open Learning (SOL) is making extensive use of the "e-way" — the Internet and mobile phones — to stay connected with its 3 lakh students.

The process started with the introduction of online admission application forms this year. Expanding its reach, the institute will make admit cards available on its website in the first week of November.

Students can download their admit cards and submit examination forms online.

"Using their roll number, they can log on to to their account on the website, follow a few simple steps to fill their examination form and submit it online," Madhavi, the institute's computer in-charge, said.

A range of options will be available to the students to pay their examination fees online. "They can use credit or debit cards or pay through net banking," Madhavi said.

The institute recently introduced a "push and pull" messaging services for students. The push SMS service will be used for giving examination and admission-related information to the students.

"The service will give students details such as exam schedule, last date for submission of exam forms and results. We may also inform students when and how study material for a course can be obtained from the office," she said.

Through the pull SMS service students can send their queries to the institute. "The students generally have a lot of queries about exam results, the course fees and location of centres for classes. The SMS service will ensure that they do not have to queue in front of enquiry counters," Madhavi said.

"Keeping in mind the queries, several codes have been created. The service will be similar to the railway enquiry service via SMS," she said.

Information on these services had been uploaded on the School of Open Learning website.
