The report ‘Dalai Lama-China talks end abruptly’, didn’t surprise one. It is the logical outcome of the Chinese
duplicity on Tibetan autonomy. Following international pressure to resume meaningful talks with the Tibetan government-in-exile, after the bloody events in Lhasa and elsewhere, the Chinese leadership made noises about its readiness to do so. But, on the eve of the talks, Chinese mouthpieces attacked the Dalai Lama and ‘his clique’ as ‘criminals’, blaming them for “inciting violent activities to split China”. Thus, it is quite clear that the Chinese regime is not serious about talks with the Dalai Lama on granting real autonomy to Tibet. The offer was just a ploy of an arrogant and authoritarian power to hoodwink international opinion.
