The crown prince of bhangra pop Jazzy B,is back with his 14th album. This one,by all means,is a royal rendition a tribute to the unsung heroes of Punjab and the folklore they have risen from. Maharajas is the singers attempt at revisiting history and returning to his roots, and for this,he has collaborated with his guide and mentor, the legendary singer Kuldeep Manak, and his son,Yudhveer Manak. I was
four-years-old when I heard Kuldeepjis music and he still is Kaliyan da Badshah, says Jazzy, praying for the 62-year-olds health,as his family in Ludhiana is going through a tough time.
His bling-pop persona aside,Jazzy says that with Maharajas,he wants to revive the traditional folk music, especially the historical personalities from the state like Dullah,Sucha and Ranjha. We all sing the Dullah Bhatti song during Lohri, but how many of us know about the warrior Dullah? Same goes for Sucha, known to be the protector of poor, and Ranjha, the lover, says Jazzy, who has devoted six tracks to these legends in the album. From Hukam,Nakhro,Teer,Peenghe Surrey to Rang Maa,Rabb,Patka,Sucha and the title track Maharajas, the album is full of nostalgia. Not only this,Jazzy has even used conventional Punjabi instruments like tumbi ,dhol and ektara. There is a lot of history in our songs and the present generation needs to know where they come from, says Jazzy. While the lyrics are by Dev Thrikewala and UKs Jandu Litranala, the videos have been directed by Rimpy Prince.
As for movies,Jazzy says that is the next level for him,and he might just make a period film inspired by Maharajas. Besides,he is in talks with the UK-based brand,Criminal Damage, for his clothes and jewellery line, which might hit the market next year.
