  • An ambitious and talented Nirmala Savadekar faced the hard truth of being a girl in a male-dominated society like any other girl would. However, what makes her stand apart is that she respected the authority while fighting to make her own identity. Today, Nirmala Savadekar, is a known name in the circuit of art connoisseurs and renowned photographers. And today Savadekar’s photographs, titled Luminous and Polka Dots, are being exhibited in an ongoing exhibition at Crane Kalman Brighton gallery, Sussex in the US. The fortnight-long exhibition is being conducted by Chiropoesis Foundation of Photography and would go on till October 11.

An MBA graduate in finance, Savadekar took up photography, which has been her childhood hobby, when she was denied a role in her father’s business. And since then she has not only excelled in the traditionally male field of photography, but has added another dimension to the art.

“It is an evolution. I started with event photography, where I use to click pictures of events like marriage and other ceremonies. Later, I moved on to advertisement photography. However, I realized that my work was being repetitive owing to the commercial needs, so I started experimenting for myself. And once, when I had a chance to meet renowned art photographer Ashwin Mehta, I showed him the prints of my shadow photography and he suggested that I should develop this into a theme,” recalls Savadekar.

Talking more about her frames and the title, she says, “Luminous is about my spiritual and aesthetic homecoming. As if my search is finally over and I have found what I have been looking for in the art and from the art. I started with photographing shadows and now the tight intrigues me.”

    ... contd.
