The Maharashtra police may just have taken a crucial step to reassure citizens after the pathology of terror seemed to have stumped the Union government. These columns have repeatedly pointed out that the Centre’s response to terror was grossly inadequate and that it couldn’t go on blaming faulty Centre-state coordination. Centre and states have shown signs of working together since, albeit problematically, especially in cracking the Delhi blasts. Now, the Maharashtra police appear to have a lead on those responsible for the September 29 blasts in Malegaon and Modasa. That the culprits in this case are reportedly Hindu extremists is of little technical import as far as nabbing them is concerned. The sleuths must zero in on those responsible and bring them to book. The courts can handle the rest.

However, there is a larger and yet more immediate, and localised, political battle to be fought. And here the identity of the terrorists cannot be ignored. Police investigations suggest that the suspects in the Malegaon and Modasa blasts belong to the Indore-based Hindu Jagran Manch, which in turn is reportedly linked to the ABVP, the BJP’s student wing. This newspaper has argued all along that the state of denial that moderate Indian politicians have on the local roots of terrorist incidents and networks is extremely dangerous. The unfolding investigations into the Malegaon and Modasa blasts show, once again, that the range of terror cannot be explained by the identification of any single community. The BJP has been strident on the need for tough counter-terror mechanisms. The Malegaon-Modasa investigations will test the party. Can it create distance from its lunatic fringe and shed the anti-minority overtones of its emphasis on security? On the ground, both the Congress and the BJP, as well as other major players on the national and local political scenes, must reassure citizens and preclude any communal fallout of the “sensitive” police claims. India cannot afford terror, far less tit-for-tat terror.

    ... contd.

Hindu Terrorists? 2By: Surendran Nair | 25-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward And of course Muslim terrorists who are gunned down by the Police are innocent students who have been shot for Fun.In fact the way Brinda karat reacted it almost looked like she had received a Diwali gift.It is also surprising that the BJP should be held responsible for these peoples suspected involvement in the bombings. If that was the case then Congress, Samajwadi party and RJD should be banned for all the previous bombings that have taken place in India. The CPM should have been derecognized and banned long back for the number of times they have used Bombs in Kerala. If these trends of demonizing the Hindus continue then the time is not far of when more and more of this peace loving community will be provoked into violent reactions.
Hindu terrorists? 1By: Surendran Nair | 25-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward It is alarming to see the glee with which all so called secular news channels and news papers have reacted to the suspected involvement of a few people belonging to the Hindu religion in the Malegaon blasts. The response of most editors and NGOs seems to suggest that it is all right for Crazy Muslims to blow up the world and kill innocents by thousands since our secularists have managed to locate 3 Hindus whom the police suspect to be terrorists. This is a surprising reaction from people who are supposed to be pillars of the society. The reaction should have been more of alarm than glee because if Hindus start reacting to Islamic terrorists then India as a country is Doomed. If any body is responsible for this phenomenon then it is the so called secular lobby along with the highly biased media. This secular lobby also suggests that it is all right for Muslims to practice outdated 6th century laws since they are supposed to be a minority.
reply to editBy: sunda | 24-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward great. the government has listened to you. Now you listen to the people. The supects for the malegaon blasts are hindu. they are tired for waiting for the governement to do something before "india is killed with a thousand bleeds". so they have retaliated. no means justifiable but this is exactly what "wednesday" , the movie said. if the govt. doesn't do it then pople will. now u r happy that culprits are hindus. what abt the time when thry were muslims? u weren't so idealistic in your comments. urs is "votebank" media. shame on you.
Malegaon TestBy: Bharavi Kulkarni | 26-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward There should not be any "ifs and buts" when it comes to terrorism. BJP (and all political parties) must distance itself from these acts. Your statement may have some merit but this is NOT the right time and right context. When you talk about people taking action because govt is not, somewhere in the valley of Kashmir, somebody is saying the exact same thing to his audience.
MALEGOAN TESTBy: SUSANTA CHAKRABORTY | 24-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward MR. GUPTA AND PARTY, WHO SAID ATS CANNOT CRACK TERROR CASES? IF THE POLICE ARE GIVEN FREE HAND ALL TERROR CELLS CAN BE UNEARTHED IN NO TIME. THEN WHERE WILL CONGRESS PARTY BE. CONGRESS RULE IS BRITISH RAJ BY PROXY. MEANING DIVIDE AND RULE. BY THE WAY WHAT KIND OF TEST ARE YOU SUGGESTING IN THE EDIT HEADING? IS IT A TEST TO SHOW HOW EVENLY THE INDIAN STATE DELIVERS JUSTICE? CHATTERING CLASSES WILL INDEED BE HAPPY IF IN YOUR NEXT EDIT YOU SUGGEST THAT HOW EVEN HANDED IS INDIAN DEMOCRACY.
Falling standards of Indian press and mediaBy: rev. Indian | 24-Oct-2008 Reply | Forward When Sabarmati express has been burnt by a Muslim mob - Huge arguments ranging from "it might be accident" or "modi arranged his own men to kill them to raise communal flame" or "hidus themselves did suicide" - Nobody there in press to call a spade a spadeBut for gujarat riots - "hindus massacred innocent muslims" , ''hindu mobs gangraped muslim women" these are splashed worldwide. Now the jamia encouter - Theories such as "jamia boys are innocent victims" , "they are students and not terrorist" , "MC Sharma might be killed by his own men or even might be suicide", "Judicial probe demanded in Jamia encounter"Ironically when ATS doubted involvement of a hindu group in bomb blast "Hindu groups INVOLVED in Bomb blast" , "Hindu terror rages across the country" , "Hindu group planned Bom blast" - these splashing even before confirmed inputs are submitted in courts.Defenitely the Indian media and press are failing in standards and are behaving not less than our politicians.
