The minority vote: 5 of 8 seats Cong won are in areas dominated by Muslims

Aam Aadmi Party had fielded six Muslim candidates,none of them managed to win a seat.

OF the eight seats that the Congress has managed to win,five are in Muslim-dominated areas represented by senior party leaders. Food and Supplies Minister

Haroon Yusuf defeated BJP’s Moti Lal Sodhi,winning a fourth term from the Ballimaran constituency by a margin of over 8,000 votes.

Another Congress leader Chaudhary Mateen Ahmad,former chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board,won the Seelampur constituency for the fifth time,defeating BJP’s Kaushal Kumar Mishra by over 21,000 votes.

In Okhla,Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Khan retained the seat,defeating AAP’s Irfanullah Khan by over 29,000 votes.

Party candidate Hasan Ahmed reclaimed his bastion of Mustafabad,while Parlad Singh Sawhney won from Chandni Chowk.

In fact,as in the past,the walled city,comprising the three Assembly constituencies of Chandni Chowk,Ballimaran and Matia Mahal,voted back the

sitting MLAs. The JD(U)’s Shoaib Iqbal won from

Matia Mahal.

While the Aam Aadmi Party had fielded six Muslim candidates,none of them managed to win a seat. The BJP’s lone Muslim candidate,Mohd Nizamuddin,also did not fare well.
