Shekhar Gupta has diagnosed the UPAs ailment and prescribed the right remedy (Go,or get going,IE,September 11). If Manmohan Singh is replaced by Rahul Gandhi,it would prove counterproductive for the Congress and disastrous for the country. Rahul has miles to go in terms of maturity and experience before he can take on the top job. And no one else in the party can match Singhs sincerity, integrity and dedication. All he needs to do is exert his authority and clear up the roadblocks in the government. But why did Gupta refrain from naming the six non-performing cabinet ministers and the Congress general secretary he considered fit for induction into the cabinet?

Holding on to the jobs
This refers to the editorial,The BPO test (IE,September 11). The way Ohio has banned outsourcing of government IT and back-office projects to offshore locations such as India smacks of protectionism. Amid indications that outsourcing could become a hot issue in the November polls,President Barack Obamas stand on the issue is not only discriminatory but also against the principles of free trade. However,it is also true that this move will be detrimental to American interests in the long run as US companies will lose the skilled manpower they were able to get at cheaper rates in countries like India and China. In addition, you have rightly pointed out that this move could constrain US companies expansion.

A marred festival
Riyaz Wanis article,Waiting for the day,in the Eid supplement (IE,September 10),highlighted the poignancy of the current situation in Kashmir, caught in the vicious cycle of violence. Despite the calendar of shutdowns issued by separatist leaders almost every week, which has destroyed the source of livelihood of small shopkeepers and daily wagers, civil society seems to support the agitators and stone-pelters. Even Mirwaiz Umar Farooqs personal assurances to CM Omar Abdullah of peaceful demonstrations on Eid day were defied by a violent mob. Yet,the favourite whipping boy continues to be the security forces.

Drawing lines
I write with reference to the article My data versus yours by M.K. Venu (IE,September 9). Poverty is a matter of perception and the number depends on where you draw the line. Each line has its own agenda. Recall the story of the boy in an exclusive school who was asked to write a story on A Poor Family. The boy wrote Once upon a time there was a poor family. Everybody was poor. The father was poor, the mother was poor, the children were poor, the butler was poor, the maids were poor, the gardener was poor, the drivers were poor, and the watchmen were poor…
