Everyone has their own share of secret tips that help them learn better and study harder. Students from different city schools, who made their institutions and family proud with their spectacular performance in the recently-declared CBSE results, share their success mantras with Newsline. From ‘self tests’ to having ‘sweet pie’,toppers say they restricted themselves to a specific diet, avoided heavy food especially during exam days and practised by writing answers in their own language. Harpreet Kaur, the Commerce topper with a score of 94.6 per cent in Guru Nanak International Public School,Model Town, said: “I always studied alone and I used to drink milk during the short breaks I took while studying for long hours. It helped me enhance my concentration.”

She adds: “Whenever I faced any problem in any subject,I used to make a note of it and discussed it with my teacher the next day. This way I clarified several of my concepts.” Aspiring to be a mathematics lecturer, she scored 98 per cent in the subject.

Meanwhile,‘self tests’ remained the key to success for Nikhita Devgan,a Non-Medical student who topped the DAV Public School with 95.8 per cent.

Talking to Newsline, she said,“After finishing a topic,I used to test myself by writing the answers. I repeated the corrections twice. Also, listening to teachers carefully in the class really helped me. I owe my success to R S Patial,my school principal who always inspired me.”

Quiz her if she followed any particular diet during the exam and pat comes the reply,“I avoided eating out and specially junk food as I am very prone to stomach infections.” She aims to be an engineer.

Interestingly, having ‘sweet pie’ in between stretched hours of study helped Vermeet Kaur, the topper of Guru Nanak Public School,Sarabha Nagar. A commerce student with a remarkable score of 96.4 per cent,Kaur said,“Having chocolates and other sweets while studying helped me maintain my concentration along with the stamina to study for hours together.”

“I am not a bookworm and studied only for 2-4 hours though I preferred to get up early in the morning. However,to keep my mind alert and fresh,I used to take 4-5 cups of tea and avoided a heavy diet,” said Vermeet.

Also, spicy snacks kept me going round the clock. I attained confidence by writing the answers. Students should improve their writing skills for scoring well in exams. This is what I have learnt from my experience.”

She added that she found the stream interesting as it comprised more of practical lessons than theory. “I studied less but whatever I did,I did it with proper understanding,” she sums up.
