Just as it’s high time for Pakistan to let go of its Indian bogey so too must we in India stop ruing Pakistan’s existence. As a middle-aged Muslim Gujarati woman, displaced from her Ahmedabad home after the 2002 riots, observed, “What do they mean when they equate this eviction with Partition? It’s not like that. We don’t want to go anywhere else and we won’t go. We bury our dead, so our forefathers are here. This is my land. There is no question of anyone driving us away.”
Maybe somewhere in the words of this traumatised woman is the bare truth of what the post-1947 Indian-Muslim identity is all about. And it doesn’t need to be restated every time India plays Pakistan.
