Vidyasagar Pandit,Physics department head at University of Pune, has written more than 1000 Science couplets in Marathi to help the common man understand the subject easily
My tryst with Science and the subject’s simple acceptance by the common man was reason enough to pen down couplets, says Vidyasagar Pandit, the head of the Physics Department in the University of Pune, who has written over 1000 Science couplets in Marathi.
The explanatory science couplets are written in the verse form, inspired by Sant Dnyaneshwars way of writing. Pandit has penned the several stages of the evolution of mankind and has traced the origin of the universe, the development of human beings and the beginning of science. Through these couplets, young students and general readers can get information, clear concepts and understand the principles behind theories and so on, says Pandit.
The couplets have been tried and tested in the city schools, he adds. Recently, they were introduced in the science text books of Std 12. In four lines, the content of the chapters is captured. Students find it easier to comprehend the subject matter better with this four-line summation in the beginning of the chapters, explains Pandit.
Pandit has compiled all the couplets into a book which will be released in the next three months. Other than the couplets, the book will have information about the contributions of scientists from 400 BC till the very recent noble prize winners.
Several years ago, while conducting workshops with adivasis,he realised how Science could be made simpler. He then thought of putting the matter across to people using simple language. I wanted to take science to people as it can make everyday life much easier, he says. For Pandit, science does not have any boundaries. Since the early 80s,he has been involved in taking the subject to the grassroot level through his association with the Peoples Science Movement of Maharashtra.
Pandit has always had a flair for writing. Superclone is a science fiction book written by him which is used as a post graduation text book for Marathi literature. I started writing 30 years back with an aim to include science in all walks of life, says the 64-year old who has also written biographies on C V Raman and Albert Einstein.
Pandit has been a witness to the social development in science during his long association with the subject. Science does not consider gender biases any longer. I have more female students than male in my class. It also cuts through the cross section of the society at large and reaches out to people from all classes, castes and creeds, he adds.
