Ruth Gee, who was in the city to flag off BCL’s 50 years celebrations, says online books will be a new chapter in their success story
Aclick of the mouse and there will be thousands of titles to choose from online, various discussions to be held involving the readers as well as bigger creative and educational alliances with UK. This and more is set in store as the popular destination of city readers, the British Library celebrates its 50 th year. Calling it a centre for activity rather than a place to just rent books, Ruth Gee, regional director, flagged off the celebrations yesterday, the day it was incepted here in 1960.
The contemporary library on Fergusson College Road has around 10500 members with 35000 books and 3500 DVD s and is one of the most advanced in the country. With several extensions and interest activities planned all year long Gee focused on involving a larger audience in the group. “We are working towards making available almost 35,000 books online for our readers by this year end. We have come a long way and this city with its rich educational culture has further strengthened our institution. This place also has a dedicated team with some working for decades. The automation of the collection has been one of the milestones so far and made an enormous difference. Giving ready access to knowledge, we will focus on involving people,” added Gee who was in the city for the first time after being appointed early this month.
