The Style Doctor

The Kheras from Mumbai felt proud of their daughter,Shamoly, when she scored 90 per cent marks, made it to a medical college and was later accepted by Cardiff University in the UK. But Shamoly herself just didn’t feel right. Being a doctor, she knew the symptoms and the diagnosis.

All she needed was to swallow a bitter pill and tell her folks the truth. “I studied cosmetology and worked as a doctor too,but I still wanted to pursue something my heart wanted me to,” she says. And that’s when it hit her. She wanted to do something creative and not scientific. “I had to fill this vacuum within me,” says the 25-year-old,who joined Barry John’s acting school two years back.

Today,Khera is running her blog,a magazine on music,is trying out theatre and has already bagged two shows on the new channel,UTV Stars. While she will host a show called Live My Life, she is also producing and anchoring Style Addict,a weekly show based on fashion and Bollywood. And well, she knows exactly when to pout in front of the camera and add quite some chutzpah to the shows as she delivers her lines about the latest trends.

“I had asked for a year from my parents, and it seems I’ve made the right decision. There are times when one is faced with the ‘you wasted a seat’ question, but I didn’t drop out or leave mid-way. I completed my degree, worked, weighed options and picked what I felt was the best,” says Khera, who also anchored a health and fitness show for Mother’s Care World. Apart from a slew of print campaigns,Khera has acted in six short films produced by Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods International, two of which were shortlisted for the Students Film Festival in Mumbai. But it’s her current stint on television that’s getting her much appreciation.

Her show Live My Life is all about living the life of a super-star for a day. Chosen by a particular Bollywood celebrity,a fan will get to travel high class, indulge in luxury living and dining,be privy to special surprises during the day and meet the family, friends and professional associates of the star, which include dress designers, hair stylists, gym instructors, and nutritionists etc. “It includes everything from singing, dancing, biking or bungee jumping, all like the star himself/herself,” says Khera. She explains: “The actors are a disciplined lot and that can be troublesome for some people. Ranbir Kapoor has 10 egg whites and coffee shots for breakfast. The fan,who was chosen, had a tough time eating all that.”

Interestingly,Imran Khan planned a minute-by-minute itinerary for his fan, including a script reading session,a style makeover,a mock media interaction session and a surprise visit by Imran himself, she reveals.

If it’s not shooting,it’s acting on stage, and Khera’s just finished a play called Cupidity. “I can’t relate to daily soaps, and haven’t thought much of movies too. Right now,I am just enjoying this,” she says.
