Theft at jeweller’s house, loss Rs 20 lakh

A jewellery store owner was looted of cash and jewellery worth around Rs 20 lakh from his residence in Sector 35 as the family had gone out for New Year celebrations to Sector 40. The police rounded up two of the servants of the family.

As per the family, jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh was stolen from the bedroom while a locker was taken along by the thieves which was lying in the storeroom. The locker had jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh and cash worth Rs 2 lakh. Also, a camera, a play station and some other gadgets were stolen. Some of the stolen jewellery was personal.

Manoj Jain, owner of a jewellery store in Sector 22, said, "We went to a friend's place in Sector 40 about 9.30 pm. As we came back around 1.30 am, the main gate was open. Also, the door of our storeroom was open and our bedroom was ransacked."

He added, "When the theft happened, there was no one in the house. We were at the party and the family of servants who lives with us was also not home. The strangest part is that only our bedroom was checked by the thieves and it is the only place where we keep our valuables. Also, our dog was fine."

Jaswinder Jain, Manoj's wife, said, "Our dog bites anyone who is new to her. We have to keep her under a leash otherwise. But when we came back, she was OK. She had no injury. Anyone who did trespassed must have been familiar with the dog and our house."

Manoj Jain added, "We had a servant called Shekhar who had left work some time back. However, he had been visiting our place for the last few days. He was friends with our present servant and his wife."
