With the onset of the wedding season, there has been a considerable increase in the number of thefts from wedding functions. Not just banquet halls, but also temples and gurudwaras are targeted.

From October 18 to November 11, a total of 12 thefts have been reported. However, only one thief has been arrested so far. An incident of theft took place from the Sector 20 Gurudwara and near a temple in Sector 28 B.

Most of the thefts have taken place in the southern and the central sectors of Chandigarh. In both zones, there had been four thefts each. In the east zone there have been two cases which were reported to the Police Control Room (PCR).

Talking to the Newsline, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Roshan Lal said, "There is no particular pattern that these thieves follow. Also, we cannot say that it is a group that is operating. These thefts have been taking place at different places and mostly by rag-pickers".

The thieves are usually children who mingle with the crowd. In most of the cases the investigation is still going on as the family members could not identify the person. Also, there have been snatching of bags from outside the venue for the wedding functions.

He also said, "People usually give their old clothes to them, and they dress up nicely. One side of the wedding thinks they belong to the other side and vice versa".

According to the information provided by the UT police, the thieves usually aim for the bag in which the shagan is collected in a wedding function. Also, mobile phones and other valuables are stolen.

The DSP advised that family members should be alert about their belongings. "It is best not to carry any unnecessary cash and gold".
