These wedding planners know their binness

Band Baaja Baraat underscores yet again the power of word-of-mouth. The film opened to a lacklustre response but as favourable reviews started trickling in,the numbers increased.

Yash Raj Films’ latest Band Baaja Baaraat came in quietly, but sure enough,it’s making a lot of noise at the box-office. Newbie director Maneesh Sharma’s small little Dilli-based rom-com is fresh,un-filmi and packs in a lot of entertainment in just over two hours.

Band Baaja Baraat underscores yet again the power of word-of-mouth. The film opened to a lacklustre response but as favourable reviews started trickling in,the numbers increased. To be fair, nothing spectacular was expected from this film. YRF has patented the shaadi- Punjabi formula and from the promos,Band Baaja Baaraat seemed like the usual Punjabi-flavoured assembly-line confection from the banner. The packaging in this case was misleading.

Band Baaja Baaraat scores because it doesn’t try too hard. Maneesh Sharma tells a simple story of two ordinary wedding-planners rooted in the middle-class milieu of Janakpuri. It is precisely this ordinariness of the protagonists that is so appealing and instantly clicks. Habib Faisal’s dialogues are gold and after a long time,we get a film where two people really talk rather than maaro dialogues to each other.

This Habib person is quite a dude. His own directorial debut,Do Dooni Chaar, was a little gem of a movie,so full of heart and near-perfect performances by that awesome twosome,Rishi and Neetu Kapoor. Habib nails the Dilli factor and writes lines that ring true for his characters. His lines are real, basic and very memorable. The Maneesh-Habib team might just become another Shimit Amin- Jaideep Sahni for YRF.

Band Baaja Baaraat makes an overnight star out of Bandra boy Ranveer Singh who by the way is so good as Bittoo Sharma that he really made me believe that he’s a Dilliwala. He gets the body language and the accent down pat,and the way he says ‘binness’ will surely catch on. The boy is a good dancer too and a serious contender in the youngistan Bollywood league toplining Ranbir Kapoor,Imran Khan,Pratik and Shahid Kapoor.

The film’s leading lady,Anushka Sharma ,really works the girl-next-door role. Her impressive turn as Shruti Kakkar wipes all memories of her ham attempts in Badmaash Company. Her chemistry with Ranveer is crackling.

With Band Baaja Baaraat,YRF gets it right after a while. Same time last year they released Rocket Singh— Salesman Of The Year. The Ranbir starrer was a fine film that mostly went unnoticed. Band Baaja Baaraat has got strong word-of-mouth,so it should successfully sail through. The audience seems to be giving a message to the banner: Keep it simple, drop the foreign locales,size-zero babes,go back to the roots and tell us an Indian story.
