Prakash Papnai from Almora,Uttarakhand, was busy making portraits of Anna Hazare supporters who had gathered at Ramlila Maidan on Saturday.
I came from Almora four days ago to support Annaji. People from my hometown have been supporting the movement by holding protests there. I want to make peoples visit to Ramlila Maidan memorable and thought of making their portraits so that they have something to take back with them, he said.
Papnai is a fine arts student from Kumaun University and claimed that he had made several paintings in support of Anna in his university. He had put up portraits of Hazare,Kiran Bedi,Arvind Kejriwal and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
I take around 25 minutes to finish one portrait and have made more than 50 till now. I will stay at Ramlila Maidan till Anna does not break his fast, he said. Anna supporters lined around Papnai to get their portraits made.
Ganganath from Shahdara said he was holding a shradh of corruption and other evils of society.
I own a shop in Shahdara and have been coming to Ramlila Maidan daily. Hum yahaan shradh kar rahe hain corruption ka, said Ganganath.
Mussadi Lal Gupta,a resident of Safdarjung Enclave, sat quietly spinning cotton yarn on his charkha. Several books on Mahatma Gandhi were on display near him. He claimed that he had been part of the movement since the beginning.
Swawlambhi log swabhimani hote hain (self-sufficient people have a great sense of self-respect). I want to spread this message among people here, he said
Dr Mohammad Shamoon, another Hazare supporter, said, his community was supporting Annaji.
Imam Bukhari might have asked Muslims to stay away from the campaign led by activist Anna Hazare, but we have a mind of our own. A lot of Muslim population has turned up at Ramlila Maidan to support Annaji. The Jan Lokpal Bill is important for us also to secure our childrens future, said Shamoon.
