  • Karva Chauth
A woman gets henna applied on her hands at the Sector-22 market in Chandigarh on Monday.

With married women all set for Karva Chauth on Wednesday, markets in the city are brimming with a wide variety of items ranging from designer jewellery to traditional drapes. And among the potpourri, the Karva Chauth puja compact disc has found its way into the array of items.

Music shops in the city claim to have sold hundreds of such CDs and hope the sales will see a sharp rise in the coming two days. Priced between Rs 55 and Rs 95, these CDs tell the history of the festival and its importance.

A few innovative collections also consist of devotional songs while some give sermons to men to respect their better halves.

“Inspite of being a relatively new concept, there is no dearth of buyers. A majority of our customers are newlywed brides who are not acquainted with rituals. Such CDs come handy for them,” said an employee at Music World, Sector 17. The store claims to be selling over 20 pieces per day.

Time constraint is another reason for this trend catching up fast.

“With most women working these days, the luxury of devoting the entire day to a festival no longer exists. Moreover, there is a decreased social interaction unlike earlier when women use to gather for the evening puja,” said an executive at Planet M in Manimajra.

While elders may scoff at the idea, the younger lot has given thumbs up to the novelty. “Since I am working on Karva Chauth and I am not too familiar with my neighbours, the CD will help me perform the puja,” said Kanika Pruthi, a web designer.
