A sudden attack by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the judiciary has stunned many in legal and political circles. The chief minister, at a seminar to mark the platinum jubilee of the West Bengal Assembly, said judgments were being bought. Even amid the huge outcry that followed across the state, the chief minister stuck to her position and said what she was rooting for was value-based politics and value-based judiciary. "Justice delayed is justice denied. Lakhs of cases are pending in courts and we are taking initiatives to clear the backlogs. I am not saying all judges are corrupt as all politicians are not corrupt," Mamata later said.

Shapoor keen to invest

While the Tatas are engaged in a legal battle with the state government in the Supreme Court over the ownership of land at Singur, Shapoorji Pallonji, the biggest stakeholder in the Tata Sons Group, has shown a keenness to invest in the state. Some 15 days after his meeting with the chief minister, Shapoor Mistry, CMD of Shapoorji Pallonji Group, wrote to the state government expressing the company's interest in investing. According to the letter, the company was interested in areas such as deep-sea port, healthcare and hydro-thermal power.

Honouring Pranab

The state government is preparing to felicitate Pranab Mukherjee, the first Bengali to become President of the country. The felicitation ceremony will be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium on September 16. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had dithered before backing Mukherjee for the post, has discussed the programme with him in New Delhi . At present, top officials of the state government are chalking out details of the programme, which will be attended by the state's key figures in various fields.
