Congress questioned BJP MP Maneka Gandhi's letter to the PM over the reported security threat to Varun Gandhi describing it ‘most ironical.’

"I am finding (it) most ironical that Mrs Maneka Gandhi is reacting so strongly but she did not react at all strongly when the remarks of the observation made by her son known to everybody at that time and now forensically proved to be (that of) her son created the biggest upheaval and divided this society," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said.

Maneka Gandhi shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying she was concerned about her son's safety in the wake of the arrest of six sharpshooters of Chota Shakeel gang allegedly planning to kill the lawyer of Varun Gandhi.

Singhvi said, "Let me tell you that the UPA Government has always provided even-handed protection to every citizen and shall continue to do so."

In her letter to the Prime Minister Gandhi wrote "It is with the deepest concern for my son's life and safety that I write to you today."

Singhvi said "Security is always available to citizens and shall be given. For her to react like this today... (she) completely misunderstands what her own son has done." he said.

What Varun said is same thing many politicians on the other parties have also said many a time. Varun's statement has not flared up any riot or destruction. Hate speech.By: Ponkoh Sivakumaran | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Lot of mothers would have been concerned for the safety of their children if hurt speech had its results. Why is one person's son more important than the sons of other people? Hate speech must be suppressed from whatever quarter. If the guy had made the speech, then the law must be allowed to take its course. The BJP, must for its own good wash its hands off this issue and condemn the spreading of hatred. It must get rid of Varun and Maneka. They could go elsewhere. Racial hatred among Indians has no place in modern politics.

Congress benefited from Varun's statement.By: KP Pillai | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward It is finally the family enemity of the Boss of Congress, which forced Singhvi to treat Varun like any other citizen, when Rahul and Priyanka and their small small Gandhi's roam all over within the rings of NSG commandos. This is too cruel. If statement of Varun is a crime, there will be atleast 100 senior politicians in India, who made much serious statements, often anti India. But, that is the irony that they are well protected within the power centers and poor Varun turned to be the criminal. Millions of Indians repeat the same statement of Varun. What will the govt do on them. Congress is afraid and do not want Varun to conquer UP. The illiterates voted for Congress thinking that Varun, the great grandson of Indira Gandhi belongs to Congress. So, be grateful to you Varun Gandhi than getting sophisticated statements issued by Singhvi.
