Three reputed schools in the city were issued notices on Thursday by the Delhi High Court after they failed to cater to the court’s direction that at least 15 per cent of seats be reserved for children from the economically and socially backward sections of the society.
Modern School, Barakhamba Road, Frank Anthony School, Lajpat Nagar and Indian School in Sadiq Nagar, were issued notices for failure to comply with the EWS freeship quota regulation. A Division Bench of Justice A K Sikri and Justice Sidharth Mridul have directed the schools to submit their responses by December 17.
The court was responding to a petition filed by Social Jurists, an NGO, through counsel Ashok Aggarwal. In 2007, the Delhi government sent notifications to all public schools to reserve seats for the underprivileged children after a High Court order in the same year.
The schools were previously served with showcause notices twice by the Directorate of Education in June and August. As per the court order, the schools run the risk of getting their recognition cancelled if they fail to comply with the court’s directions.
