Three-day meet on archaeology begins in Vadodara

The three-day national conference on "Archaeology and Cultural Diversity" began here Thursday with delegates from across the country and abroad starting discussion on new discoveries and current trends in research in the field.

In his presidential remark at the inaugural session of the meet, Vice-chancellor of MS University of Baroda, Prof Yogesh Singh, said, "The field of archaeology is interesting but the challenge is how to make it more interesting so that more students study the discipline and it becomes more relevant in terms of creating career paths for students."

Prof S C Malik, a former fellow at Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla, too expressed concern over the "lack of quality research" in the area in the country and called on researchers not to give too much importance to Western standards.

The meet is being jointly organised by MSU, Vadodara circle of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Indian Archaeological Society (IAS), Indian Society for Prehistoric and Quaternary Studies (ISPQS) and Indian History and and Culture Society (IHCS). More than 250 delegates and experts from across India, UK, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka are participating in it.

Archaeology body keen to open regional centres

The Indian Archaeological Society (IAS), New Delhi, is mulling a proposal to form its regional chapters, its general secretary K N Dikshit said. "We can open one such centre in MS University for western India should we find local support," Dikshit said.
