Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sought to downplay the comments of Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on austerity on 'Twitter' saying "it was a joke".

Asked about the controversy surrounding the "cattle class" remarks of Tharoor regarding the economy class travel by ministers in furtherance of government's austerity measures, he said, "it was a joke".

The Prime Minister was speaking to reporters at an Iftar party hosted by him, which was attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, BJP leader L K Advani, Singh's cabinet colleagues among others.

Rahul Gandhi refused to comment on Shashi Tharoor controversy, saying whatever had to be said has been said by the party.

MPs must empathise with aam aadmiBy: Prem Nizar Hameed | 23-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Before becoming an MP in the world’s largest democracy,Mr.Tharoor might have been a diplomat or a bureaucrat. We did not bother about his way of living then. But now he is an MP who was voted to power by thousands of the so-called aam aadmi. In his constituency, there are children who are not able to get a square meal, there are women who do not have a roof over them.He told at the time of election he would make his constituency like London. But,he lives as if he is in London now.Since he finds a comfortable shelter in the five star hotel,I am skeptical about his sincere mingling with voters during the election days.It was just to impress to garner votes only. He might have taken dettol bath every night. His poor voters are watching all this starry drama. If any one who has no social responsibilities, who cannot empathize the common life in India should not become the lawmakers. Otherwise all such MPs convert our loksabha into a lower house inc. That will not be a joke, but a disaster.
Joke ResearchedBy: Aniyan | 22-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Alas !! Manmohan Singh atlast succeeded the real sense of what Tharoor said. He devoted many days away from his office to research it out, for the man he imposed on the congressmen of Trivandrum, to find that Shashi Tharoor can jokes of the nature, which could not be understood by the people of Trivandrum, Kerala or almost many Indians. By virtue of his World Bank background, he could easily make out the jokes of Tharoor, the earlier bureaucrat of UN. And with that revelation, mouths of all the congressmen, from Jayanti natarajan to Manish Tiwari, are shut. Atlast MMS is proving, he is not now in the habit of waiting for 10 Janpath to issue advises !! Or was it a Joke indeed ??
jokeBy: yohan | 20-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward one cant believe these words from dr singh. shashi tharoor's response to a query intertwinkled with 'cattle house' was a well thought out and humiliating one. had this been in the US, they would have definitely shown the door by the authorities or by the people of that country. if in a flight economy is cattle house, what he will call those who travel by train in 2nd class. any how, this austerity of 20% salary and curtailment in flight travel is farce. they should try to recover pending tax receipts from bigwigs instead.
jokeBy: yohan | 20-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward it is no wonder that dr singh supports shashi tharoor. both are US pets and they must mutually appreciate their words and deeds. Had Shashi made this even in US, they would have shown him the door. but dr singh is showing undue obedience. shashi once tried to change the mode of singing of our national anthem, in the US way. if he continues it will be a great support to Dr singh, who is trying to make india a slave of the US and shashi is the best bet for that. kudos.
It was a joke - PM on Shasi Tharoor's remarkst By: Premangsu Chowdry | 19-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward It seems a pity that an ex UN diplomat who rose very high in life, and now finding his feet in a new pasture, had to be rescued for a cavalier remark of no consequene, by the Prime Minister, drum-beat by a website blog and a host of others. In an equally jocular vein, one imagines that is how the opinion polls flourish today
