Tigmanshu Dhulia still optimistic about ‘Bullett Raja’

Director Tigmanshu Dhulia is optimistic that 'Bullett Raja' will stir a chord with the audience.

Bullett Raja has opened with about Rs.8 crore. Did the collections meet your expectations?

We were expecting the film to fare better with a collection of at least Rs.10 crore. The film has done well in the single screens and in cities like Allahabad and Lucknow in UP,but has not fared well in the multiplexes. Let’s wait and watch as my films generally take time to pick up. I think the audience is missing out on the small details and layers (like Jimmy Shergill being a Bhagat Singh fan) and treating it as a masala entertainer. I guess they were expecting me to make a Paan Singh Tomar and are comparing the film to it.

What is it that the people are liking about the film?

Eighty per cent people have liked it. From the messages and comments that I have received, people have loved the punch lines and the supporting cast which is very colourful. The performances, especially Jimmy Shergill’s have been appreciated. Chunky Panday’s villainous act as Lallan has taken the audience by surprise.

What kind of criticism have you received for the film?

Generally the reviews have been good, but the female reviewers,I gather have not liked the action part. That’s surprising, because though the film is action-oriented,I have kept it very clean. I avoided the grotesque South film action, that we are witness to in so many films these days. The audience, I feel, have become bored of this kind of action.

Don’t you think Saif Ali Khan’s and Sonakshi Sinha’s romance interrupted the narrative of the action drama?

No one has commented on that. Sonakshi fitted the part perfectly, but I guess she has been in so many films of late… Anyway Bullett Raja is not a plot driven film,at least not in the first half, and it’s only in the second that it becomes pacy.

Is Milan Talkies your next, and has an actor been finalised after Imran Khan opted out of the film?

Milan Talkies will take off in September/ October next year. Before that,I will start another film by the end of February 2014. For Milan Talkies,I am looking out for an actor who has an endearingly impish charm. I like Varun Dhawan and would like him to play the part, but he has a couple of films lined up and does not have the dates.
