Tihar DG Neeraj Kumar named Delhi Police Commissioner
Just four days before his 59th birthday,Director General (Prisons) Neeraj Kumar,who is currently in charge of Tihar Jail,was on Thursday named the new Police Commissioner of Delhi to succeed incumbent B K Gupta who retires on June 30.

A 1976-batch IPS officer of the AGMU cadre,Kumar has the distinction of serving in almost all the branches of police Crime Branch,Special Cell,districts,Traffic,CBI and Prisons.
I thank all my well-wishers,my family and God. I also thank the government for giving me this opportunity to serve the Delhi Police. I shall join the force on Saturday, Kumar said.
I will try my best to do my job well. There are a lot of responsibilities,which I will try to carry out in the best way, he said about his new assignment.
Originally from Bihar,Kumar joined the Civil Services in 1976 after getting an MSc degree from St Stephens College the year before. As ACP in Chanakyapuri he impressed his seniors,who brought him back to Delhi from Arunachal Pradesh during the 1982 Asian Games.
In the early 1990s,he started pre-paid taxis at Delhi airport when he was posted there as DCP (Traffic).
In 1993,after serving as DCP of Crime Branch and South district,he was promoted and sent to CBI on deputation as DGP. It was during his nine-year tenure with the investigation agency that the Special Task Force was formed.
Under his leadership,the STF investigated the 1993 Mumbai train blasts and arrested seven members of Tiger Memons family. His teams chargesheets led to 100 convictions.
The cricket match-fixing scandal and UTI scam were busted during his tenure.
Apart from busting crimes,his colleagues said,Kumars other interests are movies,music and books. He helped the makers of Gangaajal,which highlights the Bhagalpur blindings.
