Students will now have more to choose from as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is nearly doubling its programmes from the new academic year that begins from June 2012. The new academic year will see teaching programmes doubling along with a commensurate reorganisation of the academic structure to nine schools and five centres, said TISS Director S Parasuraman, during the 72nd convocation ceremony,in its platinum jubilee year,on Wednesday.
The programmes will cover a range of areas, including social work, health systems studies, management and labour studies, law, education, constitutional governance and vocational education among others.
The centres being added this year include human ecology, social exclusion and an inclusive policy and studies in sociology and education.
Currently,TISS runs six schools and three centres. The curriculum of the institutes flagship programme,MA in Social Work, has also been revamped with focus on nine thematic areas. The convocation this year is spread over two days and 332 students got their degrees on the first day.
Last year,UNICEF and IDBI had collaborated with TISS to train and deploy 120 development facilitators in central and eastern Indian states and graduates of the 2011 batch are currently working in Maharashtra,Jharkhand,Bihar,Chhattisgarh,Kashmir,Andhra Pradesh and North-eastern states,he said.
I am very proud that this year too,50 of todays graduating batch have chosen to work as fellows in some of the most difficult areas of the country, said Parasuraman.
Wajahat Habibullah,Chairman of the National Minority Commission, asked the graduating students to use the RTI Act as a tool in their areas of work to strengthen governance.
Stating that the time has come for change and restructuring,he asked the graduating students to play a crucial role in this process of change.
The RTI should be used by all of you to eradicate corruption. The key concepts are transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority and the RTI seeks to secure these aspects in governance, he added.
