TISS to set up national vocational school

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences in collaboration with the the All India Council for Technical Education will set up a national vocational school in its campus from this year-end.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in collaboration with the the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will set up a national vocational school in its campus from this year-end. A formal agreement will be signed between the two on Tuesday. The aim is to create a facility in the country, which can help mainstream skill development and vocational education and link it to industry requirements.

This is yet another initiative being undertaken by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to bring in competency based skills along with formal learning and increase employability. The “National Vocational Education Qualification Framework (NVEQF) programme”,an MHRD project, will also begin this year from Class IX onwards and later, integrated with mainstream schools and colleges.

According to TISS,the school will initially offer several certificate programmes. While the plan is to train approximately 7,000 candidates in first year in various skills — according to present demands and requirements of the industry — the numbers are expected to steadily rise to one lakh in the next six-seven years.

From training to mobilisation of youth, aptitude testing to behavioural training, the school will cover various aspects of vocational training. Course and training content related to various trades or skills will also be developed, digitised and made available in local languages.

TISS will use expertise available across its various schools and centres to develop the courses to be offered at the vocational school. The exact modalities are currently being worked out.

“There’s a huge demand to meet the skill shortage in the country and the vocational school will help bridge the gap. TISS has brought in some of the best in vocational education from across the country and parts of the world. The institute has linkages with several industries, peoples’ groups,NGOs and networks in almost all parts of the country, besides collaborations with universities and institutions from India and abroad. We can use the expertise available across these various platforms,” TISS professor B Venkatesh Kumar said.
