Bamunghata violence Praises 'attacker' Arabul as 'fighting leader and youth icon'

The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday put the onus of "maintaining peace in Bamunghata" that witnessed violent political flare-up on Tuesday on the CPM. Threatening the Marxists of dire consequences, Trinamool leader and Transport Minister Madan Mitra said had Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee talked of revenge in the run-up to the Assembly elections, the CPM would have been wiped out.

"Had our leader Mamata Banerjee not given a call for change and not revenge, the CPM would not have existed in West Bengal. Trinamool Congress is against using bombs and guns. Had we wanted it, the CPM would not have existed after five minutes," Mitra told party supporters at the same spot that witnessed violence a day ago with Trinamool workers allegedly attacking a convoy of vehicles carrying CPM cadres to a rally in Alipore that left at least nine people injured and at least a dozen vehicles charred.

"This is our last meeting here. If the CPM resorts to violence again, it will have to take the responsibility to maintain peace," he added.

The meeting was attended by senior Trinamool leader Mukul Roy and ministers Firhad Hakim, Arup Biswas among a host of other party workers.

Yesterday, if it was senior party leader Partha Chatterjee who came out in support of controversial Trinamool MLA Arabul Islam, accused of instigating violence against CPM cadres in the area, today it was the turn of the rest of his colleagues to follow suit.

Mitra described Arabul, the MLA against whom several criminal cases are pending, as "the fighting leader and the epitome of youth". "Arabul Islam is a fighting leader. He is the epitome of the youth. He is a fresh leader who holds the light in front of the youth of the state. We are with him and our party is with him. Moreover, when a leader like Arabul would be beaten by the CPM workers, will the people of Bhangar eat rasogollas at their homes?" said Mitra in the public meeting.
