Asking people not to panic on the dengue situation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today assured that her government was taking all steps to address the problem even as it was constantly monitoring the situation.
The chief minister, who held a review meeting attended by Health Minister Dr V S Vijay among others, charged a section of media with trying to spread panic by giving "baselss" reports on alleged dengue-related deaths.
"As on date, only 59 persons are affected from dengue and this month alone, 400 persons admitted to hospitals have been treated successfully," she said.
While one per cent of the population usually contracts some form of fever, it grows by another per cent during monsoon season and all such illness cannot be considered as dengue, she said.
However, all parts of the state were under constant monitoring and the government had stocked primary health centres and government hospitals with adequate doses of medicines besides enough blood, she said.
In areas where more than three persons are affected with fever, efforts are taken to completely eradicate the illness in the locality, she said.
Despite all these efforts, section of media was "misreporting" on dengue and attributed the fever to some deaths even caused due to mutiple-organ failure, she said.
"These are baseless (reports)," she said adding there was no need for people to panic as her government was taking all effots including holding 800 awareness camps daily.
