TN not to exclude creamy layer in reservation: Jaya

Government issued orders for adhering to present reservation without removing creamy layer.

Tamil Nadu Government will not exclude creamy layer from the present reservation (of 69 per cent) in jobs and education,Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said on Monday.

In her first Independence Day address after assuming power following the AIADMK’s sweep in the April assembly elections,she said the government had issued orders in this regard. Referring to the 69 per cent reservation,the highest in the country,she said by continuing the quota the government had “ensured social justice.”

“Further,this government has issued orders for adhering to the present reservation without removing the creamy layer,” she said from Fort St.George,the seat of power in the state,in her customary address after hoisting the Indian tricolour. The Jayalalithaa-led cabinet had in July last decided to stick to its 69 per cent reservation policy in education and employment in the state without excluding the creamy layer from the quota as recommended by the Tamil Nadu Backwards Classes Commission.

Tamil Nadu has the highest quntum of reservation of 69 per cent — 30 per cent for BCs,20 for MBCs and denotified tribes,18 for Scheduled Castes and one per cent for Scheduled Tribes.

She said her government had also issued orders with effect from August 11,2011 “to retain the level of providing 50 per cent reservation to BC and MBCs as per the recommendation of the Tamil Nadu Backwards Classes Commission.
