When jail authorities came to seize the mobile phone hidden in a cloth bag in her prison cell on Tuesday,Nalini Sriharan tried to flush it down the toilet.
Describing the sequence of events that led to confiscation of the mobile phone,Law Minister Durai Murugan told the Assembly on Wednesday that Nalini threw the phone into a toilet but officials at the Vellore Special Prison for Women, where she is serving a life term for her role in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, acted quickly and retrieved it.
The instrument has been sent for detailed analysis. We have to wait for the report on the call records before reaching a conclusion, Murugan said.
Sources in the states Prison Department said the phone was found functioning and a detailed report on the calls made and received on the number will be known in a day or two.
One of Nalinis counsels P Pugazhendi, however, reiterated his allegation that the incident was a drama enacted due to a variety of reasons, including Nalinis complaint against prison officials for alleged corruption and torture.
Police denied the allegation. Director General (Prisons) K R Shyamsundar said the complaint was a bogie raised by Nalinis counsel after the phone was seized. The complaint against Prison Department officials now being raised was motivated, and was planted in sections of media. But having seized the equipment and SIM card,we have a strong case against her, said Shyamsundar adding he had not received the letter Nalini had written to him.
Meanwhile, jail authorities have filed a case against Nalini at Bagayam Police Station, charging her under IPC sections 186 and 353 (obstructing and assaulting a government official to prevent her/him from discharging duty) and section 201 (destroying evidence). She has also been charged under Tamil Nadu Prison Act that bars inmates from possessing mobile phones.
