To boost organ donations in the state, the Delhi Government has launched an online registration system for voluntary organ donation in case of a brain death.
The Deceased Organ and Retrieval Sharing Organization (DORSO) system will be run by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS),and can be accessed at http://www.dorso.org by registered hospitals in Delhi when they come across brain dead patients following road accidents.
The system, currently in its first phase, will help facilitate organ donation by providing instant donor cards to volunteers who register.
The cards will have a unique identification number that can be used by registered hospitals to retrieve records of volunteer donors in the event of a brain death.
The fact that registered hospitals of Delhi will have a username and password to access this website will be helpful in facilitating organ retrievals, said Dr S K Sarin,Director of ILBS.
He said ILBS has decided to target an estimated six million Internet users in Delhi and NCR under the project.
In the second phase of the programme,a central waiting list of patients who require organ transplant as well as a central registry of voluntary organ donors will be maintained on the website.
DORSO is a non-government,not-for-profit organisation that has been approved by the Delhi State Deceased Organ and Retrieval Transplant Authority (DORTA).
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was the first to pledge her organs at the inaugural function of the ILBS in 2009,under the aegis of DORSO.
The chief minister is the brand ambassador for the programme.
