In an endeavour to put an end to bogus voting in the elections, the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana,in a first, has prepared an electoral roll which will contain photos of lawyers who will cast votes in the elections.
Till now,the voter list only contained the names, addresses and enrolment numbers of the voters (lawyers). In addition to this, the electoral roll will also contain a photo of the lawyer. It was observed that lot of bogus voting was taking place in the absence of photographs of the lawyers. To stem this,we have come up with the roll which will contain photos of the voters, said Chairman,Bar Council,Minderjit Yadav.
Appreciating the initiative,Yadav added, the Bar Council of India has asked other State Bar Councils to consider implementing the same to have fair and transparent elections. Elections for various posts of Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana are slated to take place on May 31 and June 1.
Yadav told Newsline that soon budding lawyers, who lack financial means at the start of their career, will be paid honorarium fees till two years. The amount will be around Rs 5,000 per month. The idea is to financially help young lawyers who struggle in search of work at the early stage of their careers, said Yadav. He also said that the Bar Council is in the process of providing pension to lawyers who are above 65 years and lack financial support.
