The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has asked for registration of all diesel generators in the city to curb noise pollution.
The decision comes seven years after the Ministry of Environment and Forests issued a notification in 2002,seeking diesel gensets to stick to pollution limits.
Once implemented,it will be the first step towards ensuring diesel generator sets are fitted with an acoustic enclosure to contain noise pollution.
According to a public notice issued by DPCC,diesel generators should not exceed the 75 decibel sound limit while running, and owners should specify whether their sets come with fitted enclosures.
We are looking to identify generator sets manufactured before 2005,which usually did not have an enclosure fitted to contain noise pollution, DPCC member-secretary A K Ambasht said. In residential areas, the decibel level from each generator should not exceed 55-60 .
He said diesel generator sets manufactured after 2005 usually come fitted with acoustic enclosures as per market norms.
While welcoming the move to control noise pollution, environmental experts, though, pointed out that diesel-run gensets also pollute the air,and part of the problem is their proximity to residential spaces.
Its a good initiative but what we really need is a strict monitoring mechanism. There are specific air norms for diesel use but this is not followed, Anumita Roychoudhary, from the Centre for Science and Environment, said.
She said another problem is many diesel generators around 40 per cent are manufactured in the unorganised sector,so it would be difficult for authorities to keep a tab on them.
Burning diesel produces nitrogen dioxide and high levels of particulate matter. Despite converting public transport to CNG,nitrogen dioxide levels in Delhi have remained high.
