To see son in many people, family donates organs

The 10-hour procedure resulted in doctors harvesting 32 organs, bones and tissues from Amol Juneja, who was declared brain dead after he received severe head injuries in a road accident on December 7.

Doctors at AIIMS Trauma Centre retrieved Amol's kidneys, cornea, liver, two heart valves, bones and tissues.

Amol's family said he was on his way home in Geeta Colony on a motorcycle when he met with an accident on NH 24, near Patparganj.

His aunt Anita said: "They (the doctors) did the best to save him, but within a few hours Amol was declared brain dead. It took us a while to understand that his heart was beating, but his brain had stopped working."

It was Amol's father, Madan Mohan Juneja, who first suggested that his organs be donated. Juneja has a business of supplying uniforms to city schools. Amol's mother, Uma, agreed on December 8.

"It took some convincing since Amol was the youngest of three siblings. In the end, she told us to ensure that doctors took as many organs from him as possible so she could see her son live in as many people," Anita said.

The family contacted AIIMS Trauma Centre after reading about their organ donation programme online.

"This was probably the first time that a family approached us without any counselling from hospital staff or transplant coordinators. It was a unique case and we immediately sent a team to the private hospital (where Amol was admitted) and brought him here around 3.30 pm," Chief of AIIMS Trauma Centre Dr M C Misra said.

The harvesting procedure began at 10.30 pm on Monday and continued till 6.30 am on Tuesday.
