  • The toll in a devastating fire at a wholesale cracker shop in Pallipat climbed to 32 on Saturday with recovery of two more bodies from the site, even as its owner and another man were arrested in connection with the Diwali-eve mishap.

The blaze erupted at the cracker godown, which was a wholesale point of firecrackers, at around 7 pm last evening due to suspected short-circuit, police said.

Thirty-two badly charred bodies have been pulled out of the godown at the town, 90 kms from Chennai, Tiruvallur District Collector Palani Kumar told reporters. Three more people were injured in the tragedy and are undergoing treatment at a hospital near the blast site.

Since most of the bodies are charred beyond recognition, authorities have appealed to the people in nearby villages, especially in the neighbouring Chittor in Andhra Pradesh, to inform about any missing person.

Kumar said 23 people -- 20 from Andhra Pradesh and three from Tamil Nadu -- have complained to the tehsildar office that their loved ones are missing since yesterday.

Majority of the victims are believed to be from Chitoor. Rescue operations have been completed, police said.

They said two persons -- Ananthakumar, the owner of the cracker shop and another person who owned the godown – have been arrested.

The bodies have been taken to the government hospital in nearby Tiruttani, police said, adding the toll was higher due to the heavy rush on Diwali-eve.

Operations to retrieve the bodies were hampered due to the power failure in the area immediately after the incident. Police said due to the power cut, there were more casualties as those trapped inside could not find a way out in darkness.

Diwali celebrations in cities go far beyond the limits and cause accidentsBy: dermarasa | 17-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward this is a huge tragedy, the state political administrations which spend tens of crores of Rupees on vote bank politics on giving all sorts of gifts, must spend that money in providing employment to competent people who can make sure that factories and storage places making fire crackers are safe. Making of and using certain type of fire crackers and selling them should be banned. My God, I live in a city where thunderous fire crackers much worse than the sounds from bomb explosions were continuously heard for about 8 hours, and it is so dangerous people use them from house tops, it is easy to cause huge accidents and police do nothing to reduce to stop the use of banned firecrackers.celebrate Diwali by all means. The Govts should take appropriate actions to make sure that innocent people walking on the city streets are not hurt; children are safe and so on. We are overdoing and unnecessarily people who are not Ashuras

Narakasuran Not VanquishedBy: RSundaram | 17-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is very tragic to hear about the sad fire cracker fatal accident involving over 30 killed on the eve of the festival. . At least this should spur our society to give up this childish , risky and dangerous habit of buying and bursting crackers in individual homes. I really do not understand when we can have community pujas, why our authorities like Municipal Corporations cannot organise in vast public grounds display of fireworks professionally executed by trained people. In that case we can ban the sale of firecrackers to individuals.
