Top 8 teams for All India Invitational basketball tournament

Eight leading basketball teamsof the country have staked their claims for the top honours in the first edition of the All-India Invitational Basketball Tournament (men) being organised by the Chandigarh Administration from March 8 to 12,according to organising committee vice-chairman and Sports Director Sunil Bhatia.

After successfully organising the All-India football and hockey tournaments,the Chandigarh Administration this year has added another feather to its cap by taking the responsibility of hosting the Prize Money All-India Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Sector 46 Complex courts. All matches will be played under floodlights. The winners will take home a pay cheque of Rs 1.5 lakh,runners-up Rs 75,000 and third position holders Rs 50,000 besides trophies.

The matches will be played in the league-cum-knockout tournament. Powerful Oil and Natural Gas Corporation,Indian Overseas Bank of Chennai,Central Reserve Police Force,Indian Army,Punjab Armed Police,Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala),Rest of Punjab and Chandigarh. The ONGC players have already arrived and the IOB Chennai are scheduled to reach here tomorrow. Other teams will arrive on March 7 and 8 morning.

Meanwhile,the Chandigarh Administration is gearing up for smoothly conducting the tournament. According to Joint Director JPS Sidhu various committees have been formed. The organising committee is headed by Secretary Finance and Sports VK Singh. Amarjit Singh has been appointed FIBA Referee Incharge. The organising committee has held a number of meetings to review the arrangements for hosting the tournament which has been sanctioned by the Basketball Federation of India.

The first edition of the Invitational Basketball Tournament will be played outdoor while the next meets will be played indoor after completion of the Indoor Stadium in Sector 42.

District Sports Officer KS Bharti said that latest Dunking rings and sporting pads have been installed. The courts are being painted and marked according to latest specifications. Electronic scoreboards and 24-second device will be operated during the matches.
