Top cop assures effective probe into rape cases in city

With four rape cases reported in the city last week,Police Commissioner D Sivanandan on Wednesday said that every rape case especially those involving minors is being investigated.

With four rape cases reported in the city last week,Police Commissioner D Sivanandan on Wednesday said that every rape case especially those involving minors is being investigated. Ensuring effective inquiry into these cases,he said steps will be taken to sensitise police personnel on the safety of women and children in the city.

A delegation of BJP women members visited Sivanandan on Wednesday afternoon to express their concern over the recent rise in rape cases and other crimes against women. The BJP activists gave references to some recent rape cases,including the case involving Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja,rape of a woman at Ghatkopar railway station,arrest of police constable Deepak Chavan in a rape case by the Colaba police,gangrape of a minor girl by four alleged MNS party members and alleged rape of an aspiring actress by a producer in Versova. They urged the police to formulate and implement a time-bound action plan to avert such crimes in the city.

“Rape is a heinous crime and every such case is treated by us with utmost importance. In fact,we have made considerable progress in the Shiney Ahuja rape case. We have also initiated proceedings under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA) against the four accused in the MIDC rape case. Several workshops have been conducted to train police personnel to effectively deal with the cases involving crime against women,” said Sivanandan.
