Top cops meet in Bangalore, discuss steps to check terror

  • Senior police officers from Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai participated in a day-long meeting in Bangalore on Wednesday to discuss measures to deal with terrorist activities.

    The meeting was held at the instance of the Home Ministry and though designated as a Commissioner-level meeting, it was represented by Additional and Joint Commissioners except for Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari.

    “This commissioner-level meeting of six cities was planned by the Centre. At the meeting, we discussed measures to be taken to deal with terrorist activities. The recommendations will be sent to the Government of India for implementation,” Bidari said.

    At the meeting, the Home Ministry was represented by Bureau of Police Research Director (modernisation) P C Sabharwal.

    Joint Commissioner of Police H B Singh arrived from Ahmedabad while Chennai sent Additional Commissioner Shakeel Akhtar and Joint Commissioner T Rajendran. Hyderabad was represented by Joint Commissioner Harish Kumar Gupta, Kolkata by Special Additional Commissioner, STF, Rajiv Kumar and Additional Commissioner C S Ghosh, and Mumbai by Additional Commissioner Vinay Kergaonkar.

    Key issues at the consultations, sources said, included co-ordination between the cities for sharing information and joint investigations into terrorist activities.

    The meeting also focused on progress of various police projects, including level of computerisation, status on police equipment and weapons, forensic science technologies, traffic management as well as the status on police housing and buildings.

    The officers were told to prepare projects and apply for Central funds under the Mega Cities Project and other schemes for bulletproof/ mineproof vehicles, heavy weaponry, communication systems, night vision devices, metal detectors, bomb disposable equipment, body protectors and bulletproof vests.
