Delhi Metro is set to get a new look with hi-tech coaches rolling in Phase II. While some trains have been airlifted from Germany and some shipped in from Changwon in South Korea,Bombardier Transportation,one of DMRCs primary supplier of coaches,will roll out the MOVIA Metro train,the first metro train made in India,on June 5 from their plant at Savli in Gujarat. A look at the numbers * At present,the DMRC runs 70 trains (280 coaches),with a ridership of 8.5 lakh daily. * With the opening of new lines in Delhi,Gurgaon,Noida and Badarpur in Phase II,this number will go up to 153 trains (900 coaches). * Orders for 424 broad gauge coaches and 196 standard gauge coaches place for Phase II. * 20 lakh is the expected ridership by September 2010,the scheduled time for the completion of Phase II. * In Phase II,86 stations with an additional network of 128.06 km will be added 110.99 km in Delhi and 17.07 km in the NCR. * In Phase I,the DMRC covered 65.10 km. * New depots are being readied to handle the increasing number of trains 3 depots at present; 8 to be ready by the end of Phase II. * After 2010,work on Phase III will begin. * Phase III likely to add 112.17 km,and Phase IV another 108.50 km. * Around 414 km network of the Delhi Metro by the end of Phase IV,which will completely link Delhi and the NCR. * Loan of Rs 4,061.81 crore sanctioned from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the development of Phase II. * Rs 20,000 crore is the estimated cost of construction in Phase II. * Rs 3,894.25 crore has already been sanctioned to DMRC in three tranches. * 60 per cent construction in Phase I was financed by Japan out of the total Rs 10,571 crore,Rs 6,434.06 crore was financed by Japan.
