Trader robbed of Rs 7 lakh in Lajpat Nagar

A 42-year-old businessman was robbed of Rs 7 lakh and some foreign banknotes by two unidentified bike-borne men early on Sunday morning in Southeast Delhi's Lajpat Nagar area.

Police said when the businessman resisted the robbery attempt, the assailants threw chilli powder at him and fired in the air to ward off people who had gathered during the commotion.

The incident was reported at 10.20 am when Rajesh Kumar was going to his shop in Lajpat Nagar Central Market from his home in the same area.

Kumar runs a garment shop and is involved in money exchange.

According to police, Kumar was heading to his shop on his scooter. He was carrying a bag containing Rs 7 lakh and some foreign currency.

"Two men were waiting for him on a motorcycle at the main gate of his apartment complex. Before Kumar left the block, the two men tried to snatch his bag. A scuffle ensued and one of the assailants threw chilli powder on Kumar's face," a police officer said.

The pillion rider then fired in the air before the duo made their escape. A case of robbery was registered at Lajpat Nagar police station. Police said they were probing whether the assailants knew Kumar or if one of Kumar's associates was involved in the robbery.
