Traffic control branch of the Pune police have appealed to the citizens to use alternative roads and co-operate with the policemen on duty during the palkhi processions of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram,which will arrive in the city on June 23 and June 25.
Police said that on June 23,road between Dehu Phata and Tilak chowk in Nigdi would be closed for traffic owing to the procession. Vehicles would be diverted towards Katraj bypass from Dehu Road Police Station. Also,road between Nigdi octroi post and Khandobacha Mal would be closed for traffic between 2 pm and 6 pm. A service road from Khandobacha Mal to Nashik Phata would be closed after 4 am. Alternative roads would be made available for traffic. Citizens are requested to follow the traffic diversions.
On June 25,after the procession reaches Vallabh Nagar,no vehicular traffic would be allowed at Nashik Phata. Alternative roads from Panjarpol chowk and Bhakti Shakti chowk will be thrown open to traffic. When palkhi reaches Nashik Phata,all vehicles coming to Pune via Pune-Mumbai Highway would be diverted to Mahavir Chowk and Bhau Patil Road.
Similarly,the Pune-Alandi Road will be shut for traffic from 3 am on June 25,till the Sant Dnyaneshwar palkhi procession passes through Alandi Road. Vehicles would be diverted from Panrakuti Chowk,Charholi Phata and Dehu Phata. No vehicles would be allowed on the Holkar Bridge after the procession reaches Indira Nagar,Datta Mandir and Alandi Road. Later on vehicular traffic on Mula Road and stretch between Kamalanayan Bajaj Garden and Engineering Chowk would be shut till the procession moves forward.
After the procession crosses Mariaai Gate Chowk,traffic on both sides of road between Sancheti Hospital and Vir Chapekar Chowk will be shut. As the procession moves ahead,FC Road,Alka theatre chowk and Laxmi Road would remain closed for traffic. Vehicles would be diverted to alternative routes. Police said the traffic from Ganeshkhind Road to Vaikunth Mehta chowk,Jehangir chowk to RTO road,Bopodi chowk to Khadki would be diverted. All heavy vehicles coming towards Pune from Dehu Phata will be diverted through Katraj bypass.
Meanwhile,at a news conference on Tusday,Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare said for the first time three roads in and outside the city would be used as alternative routes.
He also the vehicles that come along with palkhi procession would also be diverted through alternative routes. He said a proper traffic management plan has been prepared to tackle traffic congestion. When the procession leaves the city area on June 27,vehicles on Solapur Highway will be diverted from Wanworie to Bhairobanala Chowk,Kondhwa,Bopdev Ghat.
