It may sound slightly bizarre but is true. When in form the Punjab Police can simply go to any lengths to harass a person. And something like this happened with Harjit Singh, a resident of Raikot, who was fined Rs 900 by the area police for something which even the law does not allow.

Harjeet Singh says, “My uncle had purchased a new motorcycle on October 16. I was driving it yesterday when these policemen stopped me and began asking for some documents. When I told them I did not have them they handed me this challan. But the reality is that I have been challaned for not having an RC of the motorcycle which is simply not possible for an RC for a new vehicle is made available after almost a month. Till that time the temporary number allocated to the vehicle is sufficient.”

The buck does not stop here alone. As Harjit adds, “This is not all. To further enhance the fine amount, the challan says that I do not have a pollution certificate. This is funny for as per the Motor Vehicle Act, a brand new vehicle purchased from an authorized dealer does not need a pollution certificate for 18 months. And the third allegation slapped on me was that I had a third party insurance. Now how is this possible for a brand new motorcycle which under law cannot hold a third party insurance for the first three years. The bottom line is that when the police comes to harassing people they cross all lines of decency and common sense.”
