DCP says move will help solve problem of eve teasing in city
While the traffic police initiated the first phase of regulating heavy traffic outside education institutions on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Toor maintained that the presence of uniformed men on the roads will also help solve the menace of loiters and eve teasing around these institutions.
For the purpose the DCP remarked, "the telephone numbers of all the officers concerned are in public and I would request the girls to come forward and complain to us when they feel harassed or threatened." (See box for numbers).
Meanwhile, Inspector Beant Juneja informed, "We are trying to manage the heavy flow of traffic around school. In the phase one that we started today we have made the roads outside Sacred Heart Convent School Sarabha Nagar and Guru Nanak Public School Sarabha Nagar one way. We will study the problems that we and the public face and at the same time the benefits of the plan and improve on it."
Juneja added, "While this kind of programme is to be implemented around all schools in the city however an exercise like this needs a lot of man power which we do not have. So we have asked the school to provide us with their NCC cadets and staff that will help run the programme smoothly once we set it in place."
Notable here is that despite the facility of school busses a large number students studying in these institutions come on cars. While the schools do not have parking spaces inside their campuses, the school buses too stand right on the roads coupled with the fact at the time when school breaks for the day the main roads outside the school get blocked due to these buses and the numerous car waiting for the students to come out, bringing the entire road and its traffic to a halt.
